This episode I host Bad Barbie. Bad Barbie burst on to the scene playing her unique style, a special blend of Disco re-edits, Funk, House and Reggae. She quickly established herself on the music scene and is now widely regarded as the First Lady of Nu-Disco and The Queen of Re-edits. She really is a star performer in promoting the world of retro re-edits & bootlegs , which is currently bubbling away in the u.k. underground. Known for her Bad Barbie Radio Show on Kane FM where her love of music and lively personality really get a chance to shine. Her love of music and energetic personality are infectious as she always champions new, up and coming artists, this is her niche finding great new music that keeps the Bad Barbie Army listening every week. This energy translates well into her live gigs from clubs to bars to festivals her fantastic selection is guaranteed to pack the dance floor and keep it that way. Recently Bad Barbie has teamed up with co-producer Evil Smarty to create a string of re-edits currently riding high in the Juno chart. Their work has caught the attention of fans and peers alike, including the likes of Greg Wilson who commissioned an exclusive remix of their number one hit “Get It”. With many more releases planned this woman is one to watch.

This episode i host DJ, producer, record label owner and local disco pioneering based in Costa Rica Napoleon. Straight out of the depths of the tropics at the late 2013, DJ, producer, record label owner and tireless crate digger Napoleon turns promptly into the Costa Rican and Central American disco pioneering gaining serious reputation worldwide through his highly acclaimed 7″ vinyl release Sudden Edit 001, the very first ever Costa Rican disco edits vinyl that arrived to record stores worldwide.

As producer, his music knows no frontiers and has been released on vinyl and digital format by well-know record labels in the game such as Kolour LTD, Editorial Records, Editor’s Kutz, Wall Of Fame, Masterworks Music, The Queen & Disco and also his own Wonderful Times record label being the first ever Latin American born and raised producer with signed music on those record labels.

Napoleon also runs Wonderful Times, the first ever Costa Rican disco edits record label and party in town with released music supported and played by scene heavyweights such as Nicky Siano, Mark Farina, Soul Clap, Nick Monaco, Jay West, Lovebirds, Jacques Renault, DJ Nature, Obas Nenor, Marcel Vogel, Fouk, Kraak & Smaak and many more. On the decks, Napoleon’s distinctive sound are usually a blend of records from peaktime vintage-sampled disco and infectious boogie to high quality funk-flavoured deepest house and somewhere in-between always pitches things down and focuses on the dancefloor.

Look for Napoleon on SoundCloud, Facebook, InstagramTwitter as well as on his blog For Devotional Use Only.

dj ShmeeJay‘s Ain’t No Big Thing radio show, live on the 2nd and 4th Thursday of every month from 8pm – 10pm (PST) / 11pm – 1am (EST) on BoxFrequency.fm.

This episode i host Swedish disco dons Drop Out Orchestra, and this show is just my favorite.

It’s hardly a secret that over the past decade Scandinavia has been the epicenter of the nu-disco scene, artists like Lindstrom and Prins Thomas turning out release after release that looked to the cosmos, sparkling like exploding nebula. For Sweden’s Drop Out Orchestra though escape velocity could be found not on the launchpad but in the equally transcendent sweat filled club scene of New York in the late 70s.

Taking their cues from original Disco pioneers such as MFSB as much as DFA, Drop Out Orchestra launched themselves onto the scene in 2008 with a seemingly endless supply of bootlegs, re-edits and covers that glittered like a frost covered mirror ball. Taking tracks by everyone from TLC and Daft Punk to Rick Astley and The Sex Pistols they transformed them into the kind of luxurious, gloriously sophisticated, and indeed soulful disco, that would have made Chic proud.

With their irresistibly taut and funky bass lines, satin sheet strings and never too much cowbell, The Drop Out Orchestra found themselves in demand as official remixes for both club scene peers such as Black Strobe and Flight Facilities and industry legends like Paul Weller. Meanwhile not content with just making other people’s music 100% more disco, original tracks, including collaborations with Ronika and LCD Soundsytem’s Nancy Whang, on labels like Eskimo Recordings and Gomma cementing their position as ones to watch.

Meanwhile whilst most their peers were transitioning to laptops and USB sticks, Drop Out Orchestra continue to bring live elements back into the dance music, not just in the studio but in the clubs too. Blurring the divide between live and DJ performances by incorporating live bass and electronics, a Drop Out Orchestra set is about as close to a guaranteed party starter as you’ll get in this business and seen them hand picked to play alongside everyone from Fatboy Slim to Gilles Peterson.
