This episode I host San Francisco based deejay and producer The Beat Broker. The Beat Broker was born in 1975 and raised in Southern California. His earliest musical influences include radio synth pop and soon after, mid-80s hip-hop by such artists as Eric B. & Rakim and EPMD. It’s these production styles of sampling, updating and remixing that would later become a huge influence on his own work.

Working at the local college radio station in the late 90s launched the next chapter of his musical interests. The vast music library opened the door to a variety of electronic music and led to the late-night experimental soundscape show called ‘WIRETAP’ which became the first step into DJing and studio time. With production partner Ryan Fitzgerald, the two decided to record their sessions and eventually have a studio of their own. They later became Broker/Dealer and have released music on labels such as Asphodel, Spectral, Traum and Sentrall.

The Beat Broker began DJing outside of the bedroom in 2001 playing everything from German minimal techno to classic 80s electro to italo disco. As part of Broker/Dealer, the duo created a monthly/weekly party in San Francisco called ‘POP’, which in its 5 years, had hosted many popular acts ranging from Erland Oye, Brennan Green and Tako/Loud-E. To create just the right mood, the Beat Broker began to make edits, remixes and even original tracks to mix into the night. From slower “cosmic” music for the beginning of the night to up-tempo synthesizer based crowd pleasers for the peak hours. These productions later became completed works and have been released on labels such as Bear Funk, Flexx, Disques Sinthomme, Ghost Town, Adult Contemporary and Sentrall. In the past few years the Broker has been up late working in his office producing and remixing for Eskimo, Is It Balearic?, Rebirth, Emerald & Doreen, Voltaire and Internasjonal to name a few. While continuing to make remixes and original tracks, the Beat Broker is constantly attempting to fuse old sounds with new ideas and create something for the crowd as well as the listener.

Look for more of The Beat Broker on his website, SoundCloud, Twitter, Facebook, and BandCamp. And of course you must familiarize yourself with Dream Chimney, a music blog and podcast series curated by The Beat Broker.

The Beat Broker’s set is his little secret, but if you ask nicely maybe he will tell you.

This episode I host Detroit based deejay and producer Pontchartrain. Detroit native and resident, Pontchartrain has been scouring record stores and DJing since 2005. During that time, his role as a producer, label manager, promoter, and foremost as a cratedigger and remixer, have helped him to, catapult into the growing nu-disco and edits scene as an already recognized and respectable force. Using the sounds of the motor city that influenced him, he has successfully approached dance music industry with a sound that is both tasteful, preserving the original integrity of the samples and songs used in the production work, as well as incorporating what is undeniably a “Detroit” feel; an underlying tone leaning towards the roots of house and techno at its core. Using a combination of analog and digital gear to recreate, re-master, re-produce and re-edit, Pontchartrain generates both brand new productions in addition to revamped versions of original masterpieces both classic and at times obscure, all geared towards making people stop looking up at the stage, and start getting down.

The moniker Pontchartrain has only been established since May of 2014 and within the same year he garnered two number one spots on Juno Download, one for his flagship EP “Devil’s Funk”, as well as several top 10 releases on vinyl only markets such as Juno, Picadilly, and Red Eye on the world renowned Edits label, Whiskey Disco, establishing him as one of the strongest introductions to the increasingly popular disco and funk revival.

As the man says; ‘All you cats and kitties out there whippin’ and wailin’ and jumping up and down and suckin’ up all that old juice and hippin’ and tellin’ each other who the greatest cat in the world is, and I’m going to put a cat on you that was the coolest, strongest, sweetest cat that ever stomped on this sweet, swingin’ sphere.

Keep the funk alive, and get back to the roots of what makes us move.’

This episode I Los Angeles based deeljay, producer, and legend Cole Medina. Cole Medina is internationally recognized for his entrancing dance music productions. Born and raised in Downey, CA, he played instruments and wrote music throughout his childhood. A background in jazz won him competitions, awards, and scholarships. In high school Cole was presented with the Bronze Viking Award, the school district’s highest award of achievement in art. His productions are heard on dance floors all over the globe in the most respected clubs and online broadcasts. Cole’s music is a sure favorite among noted underground DJ’s such as DJ Harvey, Prins Thomas, Todd Terje, Mark E, Juan Maclean, RubNTug, Alex From Tokyo, Foolish Felix, Ooft, and Rob Mellow, just to name a few heavy hitters.

Owner and founder of House Arrest, a unique label offering past and present releases still heavy in demand. From the instant house-classic “Buffalo Bill” to a more recent sold out Bee Gees remix on American Standard, Cole continues to deliver a sultry-edgy beat, there’s no mystery as to why Cole receives strong support from DJ peers and why his releases do so well…Working on his craft non-stop and forming relationships abroad, all the while remaining humble and open-minded. Cole Medina is guaranteed a successful future as he branches on his new label Licorice Delight as well as distinguished labels around the world.

This episode i host good man, ATL to Seattle transplant, Mark Lippert. Mark’s musical journey started with two 15’s in the back of his ’78 Corolla and has pretty much gone down hill since then. Hailing from the lazy left-coast of Florida, Mark started DJing in Atlanta 15+ years ago, and now resides in Seattle.

His primary focus is that he has no focus. All the manifestations of house are game: from slo-mo disco-infused jams to tripped-out techno and everything else in between. Being part of both the Atlanta-based Warm Art music collective and a resident with Cardio has allowed him to play with several of his music idols, like Charles Webster and Morgan Geist; as well as stalwarts like Alexi Delano, Franklin de Costa, and Ame. Plus disco-house stars Psychemagik and Eddie C, and up-and-comers like Trus’Me and Soul Clap.

In essence, Mark enjoys doing things with people who enjoy doing things with people in places where music can be enjoyed with those people.
