dj ShmeeJay‘s Ain’t No Big Thing radio show, live on the 2nd and 4th Thursday of every month from 8pm – 10pm (PST) / 11pm – 1am (EST) on BoxFrequency.fm, and with a podcast syndicated on iTunes.

This episode I host Detroit based deejay and producer Pontchartrain. Detroit native and resident, Pontchartrain has been scouring record stores and DJing since 2005. During that time, his role as a producer, label manager, promoter, and foremost as a cratedigger and remixer, have helped him to, catapult into the growing nu-disco and edits scene as an already recognized and respectable force. Using the sounds of the motor city that influenced him, he has successfully approached dance music industry with a sound that is both tasteful, preserving the original integrity of the samples and songs used in the production work, as well as incorporating what is undeniably a “Detroit” feel; an underlying tone leaning towards the roots of house and techno at its core. Using a combination of analog and digital gear to recreate, re-master, re-produce and re-edit, Pontchartrain generates both brand new productions in addition to revamped versions of original masterpieces both classic and at times obscure, all geared towards making people stop looking up at the stage, and start getting down.

The moniker Pontchartrain has only been established since May of 2014 and within the same year he garnered two number one spots on Juno Download, one for his flagship EP “Devil’s Funk”, as well as several top 10 releases on vinyl only markets such as Juno, Picadilly, and Red Eye on the world renowned Edits label, Whiskey Disco, establishing him as one of the strongest introductions to the increasingly popular disco and funk revival.

As the man says; ‘All you cats and kitties out there whippin’ and wailin’ and jumping up and down and suckin’ up all that old juice and hippin’ and tellin’ each other who the greatest cat in the world is, and I’m going to put a cat on you that was the coolest, strongest, sweetest cat that ever stomped on this sweet, swingin’ sphere.

Keep the funk alive, and get back to the roots of what makes us move.’

Cyclist_Ain't No Big Thing-Freq

dj ShmeeJay‘s Ain’t No Big Thing radio show, live on the 2nd and 4th Thursday of every month from 8pm – 10pm (PST) / 11pm – 1am (EST) on BoxFrequency.fm.

This episode I host dee-jay Mark Penner, alias Cyclist. From a rapturous dawn,  Cyclist, was knee-deep in disco. After a gold star cajoling turn in the DFA remix competition for The Rapture‘s “How Deep Is Your Love” (alongside fellow Canuk Pat Lok), Cyclist has gone from strength to strength; a successful all-disco residency with A Digital Needle at Toronto’s Beam Me Up has seen the eclectic dee-jay share the spotlight with a whole slew of today’s top disco mavens, bolster his production repertoire by working with some of the worlds top producers, as well as his notable work with vocalist Maiko Watson – a collaboration which has resulted in over a hundred thousand plays on SoundCloud.

Since embarking on his first international tour – an excursion which included stops in Mexico, Spain & France – Cyclist has brought his indie-dance fusing brand of boogie funk to the global stage, with a full slate of North American & European dates to follow in 2014. His own label, MANI/PEDI Records with RAC’s Karl Kling, launched late 2013 to intercontinental kudos, with a deluge of dancefloor-oriented releases to transpire in the year to come.

When not occupied by establishing Beam Me Up as Canada’s premier disco party, Cyclist is consumed by his passion for analogue synths and digging for records – an obsession which, while steeped in the past, influences a sound that is very much modern – a juxtaposition that makes Cyclist the obsessive, disco-discerning tastemaker he is.

A couple of weeks a go my friend Akis contacted me suggesting that we make a mix together.  Something for the summer, now that it’s starting to warm up here on the northern hemisphere.  The only challenge is that Akis is in Greece and I in the northwest US, so we couldn’t very well get together and do it.  So we agreed on a concept, something to play on your way to the beach. We’d each do a mix, and then we’d combine them and make them available as one full set.  The result, I think, is lovely.

I urge you to download this and play it in your car, or out on the balcony.  Enjoy it with friends.  Play it with the volume up, and the windows down.

To find more from VinylAddicted, you can find him on Facebook and Twitter as well as he runs a blog detailing his awesome record collection at JustLoveVinyls.Blogspot.com.
