dj ShmeeJay‘s Ain’t No Big Thing radio show, live on the 2nd and 4th Thursday of every month from 8pm – 10pm (PST) / 11pm – 1am (EST) on BoxFrequency.fm, and with a podcast syndicated on iTunes.

This episode I host Detroit based deejay and producer Pontchartrain. Detroit native and resident, Pontchartrain has been scouring record stores and DJing since 2005. During that time, his role as a producer, label manager, promoter, and foremost as a cratedigger and remixer, have helped him to, catapult into the growing nu-disco and edits scene as an already recognized and respectable force. Using the sounds of the motor city that influenced him, he has successfully approached dance music industry with a sound that is both tasteful, preserving the original integrity of the samples and songs used in the production work, as well as incorporating what is undeniably a “Detroit” feel; an underlying tone leaning towards the roots of house and techno at its core. Using a combination of analog and digital gear to recreate, re-master, re-produce and re-edit, Pontchartrain generates both brand new productions in addition to revamped versions of original masterpieces both classic and at times obscure, all geared towards making people stop looking up at the stage, and start getting down.

The moniker Pontchartrain has only been established since May of 2014 and within the same year he garnered two number one spots on Juno Download, one for his flagship EP “Devil’s Funk”, as well as several top 10 releases on vinyl only markets such as Juno, Picadilly, and Red Eye on the world renowned Edits label, Whiskey Disco, establishing him as one of the strongest introductions to the increasingly popular disco and funk revival.

As the man says; ‘All you cats and kitties out there whippin’ and wailin’ and jumping up and down and suckin’ up all that old juice and hippin’ and tellin’ each other who the greatest cat in the world is, and I’m going to put a cat on you that was the coolest, strongest, sweetest cat that ever stomped on this sweet, swingin’ sphere.

Keep the funk alive, and get back to the roots of what makes us move.’

This episode I host London, UK based Pete Herbert. Pete started off working in notorious London record shops like Daddy Kools and his own Atlas Records while making a good name for himself as a DJ. His reputation as a top producer really took off following his work on Eskimo Recordings as Reverso 68 (with Phil Mison) and as LSB (with Baby G). His solo material for Maxi Discs is the first original music to be released under his own name and is inspired much more by his love of early house than his previous output. Heavily influenced by the musical direction of his DJ sets over the last year, a desire to really work the dance floor and a certain nostalgia for the house sounds of the 90s (when the site of white doves could make a grown man cry).

This show I host Nelson, British Columbia based deejay, producer, and rabblerouser The SugarBear. Robert E. Livingood, also known as The SugarBear, was made in Detroit in the 1970s. Soul music and rebellious Rock & Roll were everywhere. Back then even the lullabies were sung to the tune of Barry White and the MC5 so his ear was trained accordingly. His mother was an opera singer who ended up working in an auto factory, his sister was the token white girl in a disco band, and his brother in law partied heavily with Iggy. By age 10, he had already seen KISS on their Destroyer tour and was a member of The Midnight Funk Association, presided over by legendary Detroit DJ, The Electrifying Mojo. As a teenager he started promoting music at the 404 Willis, an infamous underground after hours collective space in Detroit’s rough and radical Cass Corridor neighborhood. Robert also ran the Hopscotch record label and watched techno being born from the filthy kitchen window of the Majestic Theater where he passed falafels and hummus to hungry first wave ravers. He left Detroit in the 90s, lived on the west coast (San Francisco, Oakland, Olympia), fell in love with the wild, became a Grizzly Bear biologist, moved to Alaska, built a cabin, hunted and gathered, started writing books, then began throwing parties in the land of the midnight sun. Though he gave up science to become a full time writer and sound artist, he still spends considerable time every year in close proximity to grizzlies. When he returns from these far out landscapes he plays dance music. His favorite parties are set in unorthodox places–barns, basements, garages, riverbanks, and on isolated patches of tundra. He loves taking part in moments where something spontaneous and unexpected occurs–like re-claiming a busy intersection with a renegade sound system, then getting down in the middle of the street with a bunch of glitter splattered freaks during rush hour. Following in the footsteps of Mojo, the music he spins is unbound by style or era. He loves playing long sets (five hours in he’s just getting started) where he can explore the territories of soul, funk, jazz, psychedelia, house, new wave, punk, garage rock, experimental, hip hop, and disco. He’ll play where he’s called–whether international music festivals like Shambhala, Basscoast, and Burning Man, or even at a yard sale on the side of the highway where Mojitos are served in Mason jars. In addition to all of this, The SugarBear produces dance music, as well as analog, electronic neo-psychedelic soundscapes under the name Divination and Strategy.
