dj ShmeeJay‘s Ain’t No Big Thing radio show, live on the 2nd and 4th Thursday of every month from 8pm – 10pm (PST) / 11pm – 1am (EST) on BoxFrequency.fm.

This episode i host Ooft! Ooft! has been doing the business for years now with his rock solid original productions and rather cheeky edits. Releasing on the now infamous Instruments of Rapture, Delusions of Grandeur and Wolf Music amongst other labels, he has recently been focusing his own output on Foto Recordings.

As a DJ he has held residencies at top clubs like The Sub Club in Glasgow as well as touring around Europe, and is known for dropping just about anything in his sets from slow mo tackle to disco sounds to classic house music.

Originally running the L.E.S.S. Productions imprint alongside The Revenge and DJ 2Three, Ali’s main creative outlet is now his label Foto Recordings. In addition to original Ooft! material the label has also released deep, detroit-inspired house music from Deep Space Orchestra, Andy Ash, Medlar, Luvless, MermaidS and more.

Look for Ooft! on SoundCloud, Facebook, ResidentAdvisor as well as on Discogs.

dj ShmeeJay‘s Ain’t No Big Thing radio show, live on the 2nd and 4th Thursday of every month from 8pm – 10pm (PST) / 11pm – 1am (EST) on BoxFrequency.fm.

This episode I host Yse Saint Laur’Ant (YSE), a non-smoking, 5’11”, spotlight-avoiding music producer, crate digger, occasional DJ but all-round music aficionado, currently living in Hong Kong.  YSE enjoys nicely syncopated rhythms, heavy melodies, outgoing quirkiness and a quality glass of cheap Brandy and Coke – hold the ice. At weekends, likes to lead a more refined lifestyle, with his current favorite stench being anything by YSE Saint Laur’Ant or Paraíso. Bangs out music as one half of Matlock super duo Rhythm Plate so comes with a bit of history, mostly spanning 20+ years of DJing in clubs (was the only legal way of getting in!) and 17+ years of music releasing and remixing for numerous labels and artists; but don’t let that put you off.

YSE have provided part 2 in a three part mix series where he explores a semi-biographical history of the mellow/emotive house sound. Part 1, “Soho Radio Balearic History 80s – 90s Mix” can be found over on Silver Bear Recording‘s SoundCloud page. This mix is “How I Remember House Pt.2 (Bar and Balearic from the early 90’s)”, and will be followed by a Part 3, “Early-Mid 90s Crossover Mix” on my ‘Ain’t No Big Thing show on October 22 of this year.

You can catch more of Yse Saint Laur’Ant on SoundCloud, Discogs, and Facebook.

Steef_Ain't No Big Thing-Freq

dj ShmeeJay‘s Ain’t No Big Thing radio show, live on the 1st and 3rd Sunday of every month from 9pm – 11pm (GMT) / 4pm – 6pm (EST) / 1pm – 3pm (PST) on BoxFrequency.fm.

This week I have the pleasure of hosting a guest mix from the mighty Fred Berthet aka dj Steef. dj Steef is a Marseilles, France based producer known for making slow & funky downtempo house tracks. dj Steef started out working with Biomix (organizer of “Electronic Territories” Festival, later known as “Seconde Nature”), and after composing singles with Antoine Boullé under the pseudonym Venus Attack Project (on the label US Guidance), he created the band known as Troublemakers with his friend Lionel Corsini & Arnaud Taillefert. After an over-welcomed first LP (“Doubts & Convictions” on Guidance Recordings) and well received worldwide, Concecration came on the second one on Blue Note (“Express Way”) pushing The Troublemakers at one of the top electronic band in the French scene.

Fred later on focused his attention on Copyshop project, influenced by the 80’s (Gomma, Toy Tonics, La Dame Noir, Numoment…). Producing now under dj Steef its was the occasion to synthesize his musical roots such as 80’s electro pop, poisonous disco, classy french influences, insistent downtempo and up warding house. Fred has found in his alter ego dj Steef the perfect combination of incredible fat, slow, funky downtempo house tracks that every body is so crazy about. As Gomma label boss says on him its not about fashion but clearly about style & that’s why we all love his production stamped Biomix, in the shadows, under cover & simply outstanding.
